Standard is right for you if you manage your own projects independently — you’re a solo PM, freelancer, or small-team lead who needs Gantt charts, timelines, scheduling, basic resource assignment, and cost tracking. You need Professional if your work calls for any of these four capabilities Standard lacks: SharePoint task-list sync, sync to Project Server / Project Online (corporate PMO workflows), master projects + sub-projects (rolling up multiple projects into one consolidated view), or multiple baselines (save and compare up to 11). The price difference is $15 ($79.99 Standard vs $94.99 Pro). If any of those Pro-only features matter to you, pick Project Pro 2021. If not, Standard covers the day-to-day work of an individual PM.

Project Standard 2024 ($99.99) is the latest mature release with a refreshed UI and a longer support window (mainstream through October 2029). Project Standard 2021 ($79.99) is the proven release at $20 less — mainstream support ends October 2026, but security updates and the perpetual license continue beyond. If you need the longest possible support runway, pick 2024. If you want the lowest price for a perpetual Project license, 2021 is the value play.
Will my key activate on the first try?

Is this the same as Project for the web or Project Online?

Can I open .mpp files from Project Pro users or colleagues using newer versions?

If a colleague shares a .mpp file, you open and edit it locally with no version conflicts. The limitation is real-time cloud collaboration and SharePoint task-list sync — those require Project Pro or a Project Online subscription. For straight file exchange, Standard is fully compatible.
Is this compatible with Mac?
No — Microsoft Project Standard 2021 is Windows only. There is no Mac version of Project. Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit) required.
